Cat 3535 retainer rings shearing?

On my automatic cat pump 3535 I put seals in it and one plunger retainer ring sheared off when putting it back on. I ordered new one and got it back together second car bam another one did exact same thing. I may have torqued them too tight if
Wrench was wrong but? Anybody seen this before. By shear the head popped off to be specific.

Are you talking about the plunger retainer bolt?

The torque spec is only 18 ft. lbs. You should be using a torque wrench that can go down to 5-10 in. lbs. and torque them to 220 in. lbs. for accuracy. If you're breaking them off before they get seated to the plunger there might be a build-up of Loc-Tite in it preventing it from screwing down all the way.

That's a very unusual thing to have to service. Are you having a problem where you need to remove the plungers when replacing the seal kit?

Yeah it's number 99. Yes I do have to pull head off but I really think my torque wrench is wrong because 18 is so little.

I'm curious why you're removing the plungers though. You don't need to remove them unless you're replacing the oil seals or you're getting water in the crankcase. I've serviced around 100 of these pumps and only needed to remove the plungers twice, once to replace leaking oil seals and once to replace seals on the bolts.

That was what started this was water in crankcase and put a new seal kit in it and replaced the wics.
