And there are still people out there counting money by hand, I learned yesterday.
 
I'm too cheap. I count by hand. I usually turn on Super Troopers or The Big Lebowski and just zone out while I count my quarters. As strange as it sounds, its about the only time I get to sit and relax. :D
 
We get 99% quarters. We use the digi coin scale. It's probably seven years old now and still works like a charm. Takes about one minute to weigh and bag 1K of quarters. Never had a callback from the bank on an incorrect total.

Your time is worth money. I suggest everyone buy bill counters and coin counters/scales Save time where you can for more important things.
 
One, if you need to track actual cash vs. metered coins because you're not the only person with keys to coin boxes and the like, you have to count them, or you won't know if someone is tampering with stuff and stealing.

Two, most banks don't take bulk quarters unless they're in counted and sealed bags and to their specification (Ours will only take bags of $500, and we get charged if the count is off).

You should also track how much goes into the changer so (a) if it malfunctions and pays out an extra coin now and then you'll know about it and (b) if it's tampered with or strung you know exactly how much it's short, something that's important for a police report.

A bathroom scale is relatively accurate - if you only need a rough idea of the money pulled it would be close enough. One pound of quarters is exactly $20.
 
FWIW I have purchased some digital scales from Harbor Freight and even the office supply store for about $35.00. I tend to recycle quarters either thru the changers or give my cashiers $50.00 or $100.00 at a time. The scales weigh in grams and I test them once with $50.00 and $100.00. They have a "Tare" feature which zeros out the scale with the container in place. I then just dump in quarers until I reach the desired amount / weight. It goes about as fast as I can dump them in and transfer containers.

May be it is a toy, especially since I only paid $85 for it. But it's been working great for me for the last 2 years. I guess for the price difference of $1,010 I'll go on a cruise...;o)

I'm sure it would be fine if it doesn't get a lot of use, but with the volume of coins we count in a week it would neither last nor do the job adequately. If I bought a push-sweeper for the wash, would I go to a home improvement center and spend $85 for one that will wear out in three months of heavy daily use, or would I spend $425 for one that will last a decade? If it was just for the patio at home it would be a different choice.
 
The best thing I bought was a Cummins Jet-Scan 2 pocket currency counter. It cut my bill counting time by 75%. It sorts, orients, faces, and straps whatever amount you want. It was $4k, but with four washes, it was more than worth the money. It has been in use for four years with no problems.

I agree on the JetScan iFX. Bought one a few years ago and regained my sanity. I was hand counting currency from 9 locations. Needless to say, I got pretty good at it.
 
I got one of those old Brandt's refurbished years ago from CDI banking. They refurbish currency / coin counters and it lasted for years. I went down and wasn't worth fixing so I bought a de la rue sorter that works great. YOu can check their website to see what they have. Sometimes you have to wait till they get something from a bank that they refurbish. Been a pretty company to deal with a cheap compared to new.
 
We bought a brand new Cummins 2000 back in about 2002 & have never had to call the local bank equipment repair people a single time so far ... even though we process a lot of coins. In my opinion it is light years ahead of the 2 bank duty Brandts that we had before & were serviced yearly by Brandt's authorized repair person. Kevin Reilly & others have had a similar experience. A few more on the laundry forum said the pretty much the same thing ... so that specific coin counter sorter should be a safe bet ... especially if the the coin & currency is properly updated to reflect inflation by Congress. Congress has the authority based on our USA constitution.

Quarters recycled to my Changers are not counted. (The Changers count them as they are converted to bills. ) Quarters recycled to Cashiers are weighed using a cheap Harbor Freight Scale. I just weigh out containers of $50 0r $100 dollars and exchange them for Bills as needed.
