700 Line Cameras

If 600 lines exceeds your current DVR (for example it only records max. 640 x 480, the latter number being the vertical pixels), you probably won't see much difference with 700 vertical lines of resolution.

I've been looking into a megapixel IP camera system. Even the lowest resolution ones have about twice the detail of high-definition TV.

There is a huge difference between the HD-SDI camera systems vs. Traditional CCTV camera system, like night and day. We’ve been looking at camera systems and have found that the best system is the 1080 HD system. The cheap system from Costco is that a cheap system and it’s not even in the running. Here’s a link to the HD-SDI vs. Traditional CCTV resolution http://videos.cctvcamerapros.com/hd-sdi-cctv/hd-security-camera-vs-cctv-camera.html I think we'll be installing a HD system in the next few weeks.

I agree that there's a huge difference in the systems but there's also a huge price difference. I came to the conclusion that 80% of the benefit could be had for 25% of the cost. People still know they're on camera, you can still tell when something happened and in many cases still identify the vehicle and or license plate. If we were in a high crime area i may feel differently.

The only issue I have had with lower price system is the 480 L cameras. Upgrading to 600L where needed made them well worth it. For instance, in a tunnel shot seeing a car drive tru or the brake lights go on does not require a lot of resolution.

I bought a 4 channel HD-SDI dvr and 4 1080p cameras for $1600. The difference in quality of the video is amazing. I use for examining each car before it goes into the tunnel.

Do you feel 4 lines provide sufficient coverage?

I decided to concentrate my coverage on the sides of the vehicles entering the wash. Over the years most of the difficult claims I have gotten are concerning damage to the sides and not the tops. I still have a low res camera that looks at the tops.
