Interesting analysis. I was raised in NW pa. family hunting tradition. In fact I practically lived on venison while putting my self through Penn State with minimal outside help. Santa brought a Henry Repeating rifle with 500 rounds--I'll be a kid again when weather changes.

The world's largest army? America's hunters..
Strength of the 2nd Amendment..



I don't spend my fall weekends tramping around the woods in pursuit
of a buck, but a lot of my friends and neighbors do.
This blogger adds up all the hunters in just a handful of states, and
comes to a striking conclusion:
The state of Wisconsin has gone an entire deer hunting season without
someone getting killed. That's great. There were over 600,000 hunters.
Allow me to restate that number. Over the last two months, the eighth
largest army in the world - more men under arms than Iran; more than
France and Germany combined - deployed to the woods of a single
American state to help keep the deer menace at bay.
But that pales in comparison to the 750,000 who are in the woods of
Pennsylvania this week. Michigan's 700,000 hunters have now returned
home. Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia, and it is
literally the case that the hunters of those four states alone would
comprise the largest army in the world.
His point? America will forever be safe from foreign invasion with
that kind of home-grown firepower.
Hunting -- it's not just a way to fill the freezer. It's a matter of
national security.

Oh Henry

Great post. Very interesting, enlightening perspective via a vis the 2nd Amendment. Beyond that, Ted,

You have a legendary Henry Repeating Rifle?!! --- the badass .44 cal rifle the Johnny Rebs in our Civil War called the "16-shooter that the Yankees would load on Sunday and shoot all week!"

What's the story there? How old and "authentic" is your Henry? Are they still making reproductions?

The Henry was patented in 1860 and bought by Winchester in 1866. It has a long history. Amazingly the name was not protected. In 1996, a family that had been in gun business for years started making reproductions and it took off again. The guns are fully made in America and has taken up their old motto--Henrys will be made in America or they will not be made at all. The web site shows the owners hand on a Bible with this quote. I have a new one which is 22 LR for plinking and teaching grand daughters. They have a full line including the big boy 44. Check out the Golden Boy

The originals were magnificent rifles. My brother just sold his original Henry. He didn't want to keep it in his gun safe all the time, but was worried that someone would break in and steal it if he left it out. I am considering buying one of the new Henry's
