Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance Changed Again

There was an informational post in this User’s Group in October, 2008, making operators aware that the vending machine may be required to comply with ADA standards when building new or rehabbing a wash site. New regulations have recently been handed down that will require the redesign of all manufactured vending machines that used to be ADA compliant. The new regulations require that the selection pad be below 48” (used to be 54”) from ground level and that the retrieval bin be at least 15” above ground level. How this is all going to be implemented and when is still unclear to me. The major manufacturers are redesigning their vendors right now. When the time comes, ShurVend will make the necessary adjustments in our security systems to meet the new designs that are being made in the full size vending machine.

ShurVend was surprised to learn that we were already ADA compliant with our small merchandisers; the Junior FL & RL in-the-wall vendors and the newest VendPro-18 stand-alone vendor. We did not design these vendors to comply with the new ADA regulations, but it turns out that they comply because of our other design parameters. Sometimes you get lucky!! The ShurVend VendPro-18 stand-alone vendor is compliant as it is installed and the ShurVend Junior FL & RL is compliant if installed 24” from ground level (3 blocks high on the wall). For those of you that are either building new or rehabbing an older wash, you can pick up some points if you can tell your city/county planning departments that the vending machine you plan to install is ADA compliant.
