A few weeks ago, my new Dell/Win 7 computer's HD told me that there was some problem and it suggested that I back it up. So I did back up the HD on 2 different external HDs, with 2 different programs. Turns out one didn't work correctly, that being GoodSync. I'm still trying to figure out why it didn't back up right.
However, after, I got everything backed up, the computer suggested that I make an image of the HD. Of course, I didn't know that is built in to Win7. I do not see this on my XP computer.
Right after I got the imagine made the HD did indeed die. I chose DVDs, which took 27, but you can also do it on an external HD or a different internal HD.
When I got the computer back from Best Buy, since it was under warrantee I had to take it there for the new HD. I just booted up and went to recovery and 27 DVDs later, my computer was right back where I was before the crash.
In Win 7, goto control Panel, System and Security, Backup and Restore. On the left you should see Create a system image. Follow the directions.
I'd suggest that you do this now if you haven't before, and then when you install new software, that you wouldn't want to re-install. Then weekly/monthly whatever, continue to backup your data.
Should you find the HD crashed, you're covered.
