What is the point of belt dressing and does it ever work for a slipping belt?

Tightened belt on my exit door operator this am cause it was slipping. Figured hey why not spray w/belt dress while I'm up here>?

Big mistake. The belt slipped like it was greased for petes sake!!!

Luckily I am seasoned now and had a new V belt on hand. I cleaned the pulleys w/carb clean and installed the new V belt. Voila! No need, once again, for belt dressing.

Later when I'm in my tool crib I'm throw:ping the can of belt dressing in the garbage where it belongs.

I've used belt dressing on cars with squeeky belts, seems to work pretty good for that. I always make sure the belt is tight first though. It must be somewhat of a lubricant to stop those kinds of squeeks.

I use CRC food grade belt dressing and it stops belt slippage as soon as you spray it on the belt. I buy several extra belts and spray them as soon as I get them with the belt dressing. It helps seal up belt so water is not drawn into the fibers of the belt. I also use plastic bags from my water softener salt to sheild the belt so water does not splash up on the belt when a car is going through a dryer or racker panel blaster. It also does not hurt to rough up the surface of the metal that comes in contact with the belt with a little emery cloth.

My experience is the old stick type grabs better than the spray.

I got some of those adjustable link-type belts - they're pricey but you can make any size.
