Best of the Best Newspaper Promotions?

mjwalsh

6 bay SS w/laundromat
Locally, every year our main local newspaper has this "Best of the Best" contest. It includes lotsa categories including car washes. Any of you have experience with similar contests that can help or diminish us some public relations wise. I am concerned about spending too much money on print ads especially before we get our web site far enough along to make sure potential customers have another way of learning about our facility.

Believe me from experience --- it is a lot more fun to be at least nominated & even win than not. It seems like if us Forum Brainstormers would have a higher than average winning of these types of contests it would also reflect well on our Forum.

What are you asking?

Are you in fact the best carwash?

Why or why not?

This is where something like facebook could help you get votes I think.

Does being voted best actually help your checkbook balance or is it for your ego?

I see restaurants all over displaying certificates claiming they are the 'best of 2010 etc'. That isn't why I eat there, so does the public even care?

People have a very short memory. They'll remember that your SS hose broke and soaked them far longer than the fact that your wash was 'best of 2009'.

We were voted best in our town and best in our county. Put a single post up on facebook asking people to vote for us and it was all downhill from there. I think its more to stroke my ego than anything. Nice bragging rights though.

If you are voted best, you need to capitalize on it with #1 as the focus of your marketing campaign.

Sounds good. It would, I suppose, have some influence on buying by customers.

our local paper runs a " best of " contest every year. and this year we were the car was voted best. just in the paper last nite

I usually stay away from those businesses "voted best in [year]". My experience in my own town here is that whoever pays the most gets voted the best. Usually its word of mouth that gets you the true gems. But that might be different depending on your location.
