Beware of rootkits
Rootkits are malware programs that gain administrative access to computers and hide themselves while doing their dirty work. A new report from anti-virus company Avast says three fourths of all rootkits found in its latest study infected computers running Windows XP. The most commonly found rootkit was TDL3 or TDL4. Rootkits are particularly difficult to detect and remove, and the problem is exacerbated by the fact that many XP users haven't installed SP3, which is required in order to receive new security updates.
