Bill Breaker Fees

Is it unlawful to charge a fee to bill break. For example if an individual puts in $20; can the bill breaker return $19, keeping $1 for a usage fee?

Here in Atlanta they have machines that will count all the change you put into it and keeps 10% so I am thinking it is probably legal but I am not sure how many people would be willing to change a $20 for $19.

I do believe you can charge for whatever you want - not much different from cashing checks and charging a fee - just be sure it is prominently displayed!!

While you can do mostly whatever you want at your business, I would be hesitant about charging a fee. I have a customer with bill breakers whom I admire due to his business acumen. The guy really knows customers. He has a wash and gas stations. he told me tha putting in the breakers was one of the best thing he ever did. He would see customers come up to his changers with a $20 and walk away because they didn't want a pocket of quarters. The first year he had the machine about $70,000 went through it. Just one example, but by a good observer. And by the way, I hate those places that charge to count my change. I belong to a credit union that will do $200 for free. So the once a year I do my pocket change I do the limit at the four local locations. Most people hate extra fees. Try flying somewhere now and you'll see what I mean.

I bring this question up as I was in Las Vegas last week down on Fremont street where the Heart Attack grill is located and used the bill breaker out front,got charged $ 2 to break a 20.There were no signs stating there was a fee involved except on the ATM machine.Anything goes in Vegas.

How about $18 plus two $1 tokens? At least they have to leave some money.
