Black Cat pump oil

My manager changed the oil in some Cat pump 623's. He then tells me that the oil in one of the pumps was black.

He didn't save it for me to see.

What could that be? Heat? Failed black oring?

I've never seen a Cat pump's oil turn black.

I'd recommend changing it again in a few days and see if it comes out clean.
