MY 623 cat pump for my SS needs a new bearing on the drive pulley side. Can I change this one bearing only and if so do I need a press to remove it?
Can you boys give me some details on how I would it?
The only way I see to remove the pulley side bearing is to:
Take back cover off, remove connecting rod caps, push rods and pistons away from crankshaft, remove bearing retainer caps, seals, and o-rings, both sides. Then you can drive the (pulley side) bearing out using the crankshaft. Just make sure you support the casing around the bearing, you don't want to damage it. Depending on the press/fit of the bearing, it might come out easy, maybe hard? If you had a bench press I would use it. BTW, if you get into the pump this deep, why not change out both bearings, seals and o-rings? I would....
I haven't ever tore into one of these yet, but looking at the drawing, it doesn't look that difficult. I wouldn't be afraid to tackle it.....
I've replaced that bearing on Cat pumps - a press would be easier, but you can drive it off and back on with hand tools. To get the old one off, stand the shaft on a piece of wood so you don't damage the end of the shaft and just hammer it off, working back and forth on either side with each blow. You'll need a soft piece of metal such as aluminum to drive the new bearing on - you'll need to drive it by the hub.
Keep the connecting rods in the order - they should go back on exactly the way they came off.
Maybe it's just me, but I haven't found the best way to remove the connecting rods and get them back on so the pump doesn't self destruct. The Cat manual lists the torque for the bolts, and in the pumps I did, it better be right. They sometimes call for Locktite on the threads.

It's a matter of taking them off and keeping track of where they were removed from so they can go back on the same way. The crankshaft has to go back in the same direction too.
There's never LocTite called for with the connecting rod bolts on a Cat pump.
Update:
Well we got the pump and bearings all pulled apart No problem went well.
Now Im jst waiting for the bearings and misc parts to show up, they were to arrive today but the 20 inches of snow has them on hold.
