Cell phone usage in self serve bay.

This problem has been getting worse and worse. People come into our bays to talk on their cell phones. I guess it is the shade they are seeking but I really don't know. I do know that the carwash can be lined up and they pay no attention to what is happening behind them nor do they care. Customers get pissed off and drive off sometimes. Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone have any solutions?

Unless you're onsite and politely nudging them, I don't think you will fix that problem. I'm looking at adding splash radio with a periodic reminder that to be in the bay, you have to pay, etc. I'm curious if anyone has had any success stories.

my partner in my used car business likens the iPhone to a crack pipe.

I love the police body cam videos where the police are questioning someone about drunk driving and they're texting on their cell phone the whole time and not even looking at the police officer. It's an addiction to the cell phone. i feel like it's more common with women but maybe that's my unfounded opinion.

We do have this issue from time to time. When I'm there and ask if they are going to wash most of the time they say yes. Most of the time those people leave and don't wash. Had a couple sitting in their car on a busy day for maybe five minutes or so. There was one waiting for that bay. I asked if they were going to wash and they had several strange answers but they ended up leaving. SMH.

We had limited success by hanging a red banner sign over each bay that had "EXIT" on one side and "NO TIME ON METER, MUST LEAVE IMMEDIATELY" on the other. The biggest benefit was something (huge) to point to when asking them to pull forward out of the bay.

We added speakers and play a local rock station in our bays on a timer between the hours of 7AM and 10PM. Its just loud enough to keep people from comfortably talking on their phone, but not so loud as to be obnoxious. Highly recommend. Also customers often comment on the comfortable atmosphere around the wash with the music and bright lights. Win win....

I have put two "NO CELLPHONE" signs up in each bay so that no matter which way they enter the bay the sign is right outside the drivers window. It doesn't help much. I have tried all kinds of things, I have looked for a device that would kill their cell phone signal that I could operate myself only when I have determined through our cameras they are on the phone. They do make these devices, I just don't know about the legality of these devices. It would have to be short range so as to only effect the person in the bay itself. I have also thought about installing a big foamer nozzle in the center of the bay and just foaming their car. I could tie it to the existing foaming brush system so it wouldn't be very hard to make. I have been lied to so many times where they tell me they are going to wash and the thy just drive off, that I am becoming mentally unbalanced. So why not just have some fun. While I was writing this reply Randy sent in an idea that I think I might try. I can control my bays with my cellphone already. I will just add another switch to operate a solenoid valve and spray water from the boom swivel area in each bay. I will let everybody know how this works in the future. Thanks very much for all the inputs.

My brother has a problem with people parking in the bays for hours on end. He installed a water line with a valve that he can control remotely that drips or sprays water on there car. It works well.
Maybe a nice non staining red dye mixed in!

wait till your town installs free wifi and the transmitter router or whatever you call it is across the street from your carwash. and then the police chief crawls your butt for all the loitering

That has not happened here yet, but with our luck it won't be long. I guess we are going to have to follow Sam's lead and have club carwashes so we can have a little control.
