Unless I see prior damage to the mirror I replace them. The ones that break most often are avaliable from aftermarket suppliers and are usually inexpensive. S-10, Grand Am are the most likely to break. If you are breaking more than a few of these a year, I would look to adjust my equipment.
Just dodged a bullet on one of those Grand Am mirrors. A woman came around with the driver's side hanging off. Seemed alright going in. She just wanted us to duct tape it up so her mechanic son could fix it later like the other one. 3 sheet metal screws drilled in from the outside where the breaks were.
My team is trained not to pay for a mirror if there is any mark on it. I don't know about anyone else, but I find that the factory painted Grand Am mirrors don't break... just the unpainted dual post style.
We get ours from a local office of crosscanadaparts.com, for everyone in the US, lkqcorp.com is essentially the same company.
We install them ourselves. Always good for a laugh when a customer thinks you need to be a certified mechanic to change a mirror. lol
