I think it is fair to say cleaning the pit is the pits if you are doing it yourself. As a new express tunnel owner, we have had the opportunity to jump in and shovel out twice.

I know there are some roto rooter type places that can come out and pump out the pit and the reclaim for a chunk of change.

Is there a pump or method that would be useful to the do it your selfer? we have tried a small sump pump but it clogs frequently with the sludge. Our wash is 150 feet and our customers live on a lake with mainly gravel driveways.

Try looking up ring o matic. They make trailer mounted suction sump cleaners that make it much easier. They also make one with a hydraulic clam shell digger that is a little cheaper. Some rental places will rent them to you and you might want to give it a try before you buy one. One of the best investments I ever made was a ring o matic pit cleaner.

Thanks. I have never heard of this equipment but it makes sense that there should be something like it with the proliferation of washes.

We have a Ring-O-Matic clam shell machine. Simply the BEST! Look them up here.

We also have a vacuum suction machine from a different manufacturer, gets the job done, but with a lot more effort. We only use the vacuum machine in our reclaim tanks. The clam shell machine it used everywhere else.
