My Ingersoll Rand (older, pre -box store style) compressor in my detail shop builds pressure and once in awhile releases pressure through the safety (?) valve near the pressure switch right after shut-down. I push the button on the valve with my finger and it stops.

Crud in the valve? Bad valve? Need a new pressure switch (it is fairly new though)? It is an intermittent issue.

Replace it with the correct pressure "Pop Off" valve. The spring is weak and opens before it reaches the "safety limit" pressure.

If it's the safety pop-off that's leaking, either it's failing or the compressor isn't shutting off at the right pressure. Do you have a gauge to read the pressure in the tank to be sure it's not set too high?

There are number of things that could be wrong. First check the pressure in the tank. If the pressure switch is faulty the compressor could run until it over pressurizes the tank lifting the safety relief valve before it shuts off the compressor. You could have a faulty safety relief valve that is weak enough to not lift every time the compressor cycles. If it lifts it should be replaced with the correct safety relief valve
