But only on some cylces. I thought these were driven directly by the gantry moving along the chain. but somtimes they spin great and othertimes they stop. belts seem to be tight. seems worse when very cold. Could something be stripped in the drive?

It's most likely the belts slipping. You may have a swivel leaking, since they tend to start leaking on low pressure first you're probably getting presoak on the belts with the first pass, then it flings off on high pressure and they grip again. If you don't have the spray tips turned exactly 90° out from the gantry the pressure can force them to spin with the gantry going one way but they won't spin the other way.

The belts need to be really tight. If you can spin the arms easily by hand, even one way, they're loose or worn. I recommend link belt if you have to replace them. It's cheap from vbeltsupply.com and it will last a lot longer since they're all synthetic. It takes a bit more than 15 feet per side. Or if you want to spend four hours pulling the shaft out, I can give you the part number for OEM belts.

I bet there is a problem with the key or setscrew that holds the pulley to the shaft of the spinner. I'm not sure, but I think there's a couple renditions of the pulleys based on year. If its one that the screw just tighens down on the keyhole of the shaft, the set screw probably milled a circle around the shaft. Be careful tightening it. If that is the problem, you might be able to move the pulley down the shaft a little and tighten it down there. This happens when the spinner hits something (like a dumb*ss) and the belt force makes the screw strip out of the shaft keyway. Others, if I remember right, had a halfkey which was stronger and the belt would slip instead when a dumb*ss was present in the bay.

tightened the top belt and it seems to be working. Now the spinners are almost impossible to move manually in one direction and pretty stiff, although will slip some, in the other direction. New link belts on the "to do" list. thanks .

It's always going to slip some in one direction because of the way they do the tensioner. Sounds like you've got it tight enough.
