Dash board glas spots

Earl Weiss

Well-known member
Customer complained that Dashboard glass was cleaned and spots were left. (2004 Toyota)

Looks like the dashboard speedo cover was sprayed with glass cleaner and some spray got behind glass and when it dried it left spots.

She said this is what dealer "guessed" Tried stuff on theoutside of the glass / plastic and it appeared as though the spots were behind the glass.

Seems like glass / plastic will need to be removed to clean it.

Anyone see this before?

It is possible that the spots are behind the plastic, but I suspect the spots are "stains" in the plastic due to the glass cleaner used by your detailers.

Certain alcohols will in fact stain (with spots) certain plastics used in panel covers.

The problem is that the manufacturers do not know which alcohols will stain which plastics. They are working on it, but as far as I know they have not made a definitive determination.

That is why we NEVER allow our detailers nor our trainees to EVER spray any chemical on the dashboard of the car.

And with the plastic panel covers, use ONLY WATER to clean them and you are always safe.

Detailers like to spray because it is easier for them, but not necessarily more efficient or more safe for you.

I find it hard to believe that you got window cleaner behind the plastic. Was this car detailed, or just washed? Since the plastic is already damaged, spray some more window cleaner on it to see if it spots again. If it doesn't, start looking for another cause. Hairspray will cause spots on some plastic surfaces. Liquid airfreshener could do it also.

Contrary to what you say, it is very possible to get chemical behind the plastic panel covers if you allow detailers to spray anything on the dash area.

In our case it was dressing that got sprayed on the dash and then wiped off by the detailers because it was "easier" than applying to appropriate areas by hand.

What happened is some of the excess dressing creeped under the plastic panel cover edge and created some visible moisture behind the cover.

What we had to do is take the car to dealership and let them take off the dash so we could get to the back of the panel cover and wipe it clean.

Kill the profit on that job and a few more for the day.

DO NOT SPRAY CHEMICAL ON THE DASH AREA, EVER.....

Went on a Camry Forum, While unusual, it is not an unheard of problem. The dealer even suggested that was the cause. The customer did not say anything right away but returned later. I can only guess it is that is when the liquid dried and left spots.

AFAIAC it seems the problem was with the vehicle. A bad seal in the lower right hand corner allowing some moisture to infitrate. Their was no negligence by having some spray contact the surface.

I have seen this problem exist before I ever touch the car with any cleaner or rags etc.

I like Bud's idea of never sprayong anything on the dash; spray the cloth instead and wipe.

From the Camry forum it is almost more like getting moisture near the glss or seal, having it condense inside the glass and then dry leaving spots.

So it seems you not only should not spray the glass, but also avoid anything too damp as well.
