I need to add an exit door to two IBA's. 1 Wash World and 1 Ryko. The doors are for sound not climate. So car pulls in, and before the IBA starts the door closes. At the end of the cycle it opens. Approx 12' wide and 10' high. I need approx 10 db attenuation. Any recomendations?

Pros and cons of counter weights vs springs?

Thanks in advance.

I've had both and both are expensive nightmares, problems all the time. If you need to cycle them on every wash you will have even more problems. The advantage of counterweighted doors is that you don't have a spring dripping rust streaks on the door. I have four WyndStars now and will change out my other dollar eaters as they fail and finances allow.

You may not need doors if that is the only purpose, as i had a noise problem and got down about 15db total. I found some thick vinyl in 1 foot wide strips, and went from floor to ceiling and narrowed the door opening by almost a foot on either side. I closed my door down to the 8 foot level so 2 feet shorter, and that cut down on noise. I hung some indoor outdoor carpeting in front of blowers on door side about 3 feet wide, and it absorbed alot of sound. Just thought you might think of option as doors can be a headache--Malfunctions, door hits, and maintenance.

I was realy impressed with Wyndstar doors and the vinyl doors in general but none of them could provide me with db reduction data. I wan tto be fairly certain they are going ot do the job before installation.

I think any door would give you 10db. I would guess if you played around with just a tarp in front of door you would see that would give you 10db. If i remember correctly every 3db doubles the sound, so 10db is significant, but should be easily attainable with any door.

I too have had springs and counterweights, both proved to be high maintenance. I bought a pair of Wyndstar doors three years ago and have done zero maintenance with zero problems.

I tried the tarp test and it barely provided a reduction at all. Granted the sides were loose but I am not sure if it would be enough.

A vilyl tarp is pretty much transparent to sound. A heavy canvas would do more, but you'd need something heavy and padded like a moving pad to stop any significant sound.
