DVR Capability Question?

Our GE Kalatel DVR which is approximately 2005 technology is probably older than most of the systems other operators are using. It has the capability to allow a person to view the playback & still be recording. Does everyone else have that capability?

One of the reasons I am asking is that I was visiting with an IT person who works with our Bismarck PD & possibly on the table will be allowing the PD to view footage when needed remotely ... through a program such as LogMeIn's JoinMe or Teamviewer etc. There would be some advantages over putting together DVDs etc ... especially where the investigator needed to look at a lot of minutia footage. I am thinking in terms of like how they apprehended the perps from the Boston Marathon bombings etc. Nowadays bandwidth is much less of an issue than before.

I haven't seen one in years that doesn't have that ability. The limitations of the hardware that wouldn't support the data transfer have long been surpassed.

Yikes...I can think of many reasons not to allow them to just log into your cameras remotely! I have worked with Lawful intercept with phone companies. Depending on the issue, I typically say..."get a court order and I'll give you want".

Based on a court order format ... given limited resources that us operators have ... I wonder if we could sometimes get reimbursed the time involved for getting what they specifically ask for. In the past I have never requested a court order but went to great lengths to allow them access for free (patriotic duty?) to the requested parsed out footage that I put on my Google Drive storage specifically for them. The access was limited to them & tended to be related to very horrific crimes within 2 blocks away of the place. That is why I mentioned the Boston Marathon Bombings example. Once the PD had received info that a man wanted for trying to assassinate a Fargo Police Officer was spotted on our premises. The requests are usually not too trivial & have been numerous at times. I honestly am not making up the assassin bit either ... those were their exact words. Do you think I might need a full-time bodyguard if the secret to an eventual apprehension got out?

Basically, I was just thinking ... that allowing them access to the archive within the DVR would be more efficient since parsing out specific times & specific cameras for them can be very time consuming. Their capability would also be increased by accessing at that level ... than what I can reproduce on DVDs. It seems like there would be a way to block their access if needed & only allow access when I give them specific permission.

Well you can do that by creating an account and deactivating it...reactivate when needed. That or turning on/off the TCP ports at the router that are used for remote access.
