Last week I decided to change from ATT to Verizon cell phone. I got all signed up and switched and in a few days I got my first bill, I happen to read the details and as usual there was the normal fed tax, state tax, and a city tax of $1.72, then you look at the "administrative" charges. Now the bill was $50 for the months service before any other charges. There was the usual fed universal charge and the regular charge, then an admin charge, but then I notice a $8,21 charge labeled Effect of City Tax charge. So it turns out that you are charged $8.21 so that they can send the city $1.72, Needless to say, I no longer have Verizon.

You might want to read your bill.

I gladly pay the Effect of City Tax charge to not have to deal with the dropped calls, "All circuits busy" messages and lousy coverage and support from AT&T.

Thanks very much for ther report on V. As I reported before I tried Vonage. My experience was as bad as yours with the other V. So be it.

My wife (accounts payable dept.) noticed some high 'added service' charges on our Verizon bill last night. This morning I called to inquire.

They informed me that 'other companies' tack some seemingly bogus ($70+)charges onto the Verizon bills each month!!!! WHAT?!

They promised to a.) remove the fees and credit my account.

and b.) review my account over the past year and remove & credit my account for the total of all the added service charges they find!

I can't believe companies can do this. What's up? I guess in a tight economy we need to go over every bill and fee with a microscope to protect ourselves. No more opening up a simple bill and writing a check unless you enjoy wasting money. Geez!

Waxman,
Do you mean land line or wireless?
I just fired verizon for my landline for that reason.
Wireless seems to be ok though.

Land Lines are usually controlled by your states Utilities Commission, but Wax is right you need to understand all of the charges that any company is adding one. I went with the Pay as you go plan to see if its more or less than what I had. You just pay $100 and no contract, its good for a year, $1 a day of use, and .10 a minute used.

Also, in WA if you cut off your ability to dial long distance, on your land line you save about $5 in taxes and fees. You can still dial 800#s and I use to use a card to make long distance calls, now I use Skype, $36 a year and MagicJack for $20 a year.
