Well it's coming up on the greatest of all Mexican holidays again. I always get amused to see our southern neighbors, and quite a few yankees also, celebrate this day. I made an easy $100 bet with a friend last year by saying that it isn't really a Mexican holiday. In fact Budweiser simply made it up. After Bud bought the Corona name, they decided that they needed a good way to sell the beer here in the states. Someone did a little search and found an obscure date in history when the Mexican military fought and won a battle somewhere. It was never celebrated or even acknowledged in Mexico. Only historians even knew about it. So with a lot of promotion and sales on Corona, voila, we have a new holiday. There really are a lot of gullible people out there. It's an easy bar bet.

Cinco de Mayo has been celebrated in California since the 1860's. It's neither a holiday nor made up by beer companies.

Well Mep, I'm afraid that you are just plain wrong. Are you really trying to tell me that this has been celebrated since the 1860s? Until about 20 years ago, no one had ever heard of it. I lived in Texas for a while, and there is a large population of Mexicans living there. It was never mentioned till Bud bought Corona. It is advertised here now as a holiday. Just what am I missing? It must be hard for you to walk a straight line with that chip on your shoulder all the time.

Not trying to tell you anything. I'm stating a fact.

Until about 20 years ago, no one had ever heard of it.
I remember it being celebrated here in Texas since I was five years old. That was more than twice 20 years ago.

It was never mentioned till Bud bought Corona.
It was never advertised on TV or radio until Budweiser wanted to profit from it.

It is advertised here now as a holiday.
By whom? I can't find one single commercial by Budweiser or Corona calling it a holiday.

It must be hard for you to walk a straight line with that chip on your shoulder all the time.
Don't know what you're talking about there.
