how long do you operators cut your pit grates? Mine are cut 36 inches long. Any other sizes and why?

When I went to Fiberglass I made them 48" long. That's how wide the panel was and I got as many as I could from a panel. With steel I may have gone to 24" to make them easier to handle. 48" was too heavy and 36" does not divide out of a 4 x 8 panel.

Length of pit grading sections varies by type of material and conveyor design.
Pit grading must let water through and it must also support a certain amount of weight.
Typically, the longer you make a fixed width panel, the less weight it will support without giving away.
So, it would not be advisable to deviate from OEM specifications.

I'm sorry let me clarify.. I'm replacing my conveyor existing steel grating with fiberglass. My current dimensions are 22" width by 36" in length. I have a panel that is 3 feet wide by 10 feet long. Yes, I'm looking to maximize with out waste.

Earl has the reply that makes sense - obviously it needs to be wide enough to span the gap across, but the length of the grating (not grading) along the pit has no effect on the load it can handle.
Can you get the same product in a 24" width? Are you looking at a square grate fiberglass or the I-beam style?

Steel grating often, but not always asymmetrical- has rectangular holes so the orientation would affect the strength over a 22" Gap. Fibergalss typicaly has square holes so the length over the 22" gap will not affect the strength. If this was designed for a wash it should be OK for the 22" gap but you would have to consult mfgr specs. MY advice - Not to rely on - Make them 36" long x 22" wide.
