I had a credit card reader go down yesterday. Called my supplier and had one shipped. I installed it today and all is well. I almost hate to ask, but does anyone have a better place to get these than Hamilton? I was quite shocked at the price, and didn't see anything that makes them all that special. Also, can you have these things rebuilt, or repaired?

I was hoping Etowah Valley was going to get their new credit card system rolled out soon, but now I'm into a new reader that I assume will not be able to be reused with Jim's system. Oh well...another day at the wash!

Thanks,
Lighthouse.

The reader itself it not unique to Hamilton, but the software in it makes it proprietary. Hamilton doesn't repair them, but if you can find someone proficient in that field it can probably be done.

Depending on which reader your talking about, I have one that I need to get rid of. I think it was used less than half a year.

Sorry to necro-post but did anyone ever figure out if these readers are repairable? We have 2 at my workplace and people keep stuffing quarters in the slot and breaking them. $300 worth of damage from 75 cents is a bit ridiculous. Thanks in advance.

Nope, they are not repairable. The cost of repairing them is over 80% of a new reader so it's not feasible to repair them. They used to have a plastic shim that cocked the surface mount reader out at an angle so when coins are inserted they will roll back out. The company that made them went bankrupt so they are no longer available. I bought up a number of them and still have a few left if you need one.

Hamilton has come way down on the price of card readers. I just ordered another for a DTT unit for about $260, used to be about $430.

Thank you so much for this response. Went ahead and replaced both of our broken readers and was able to fabricate shims like you talked about. Working like a charm so far. For anyone to get quarters stuck in there at this point is going to take some effort. Thanks again for the advice, my boss couldn't be happier with the results.

I just buy these and the wire pigtail from the old DTT to the one that came in the mail. BTW, the same method works for the Swipe at the bay for Coleman. Typically the reader goes bad, not the wiring harness. Someday I will figure out which part # has the right wiring harness/pigtail attached.
So is that reader the same quality as the Brush Industries reader? I see that it has a "die-cast metal base stainless steel wearplate and impact-resistant housing".

The would assume your harness is using a molex connector..... but you could always just replace both terminal connectors?

We have those readers in ALL of our bays and autos. They are the same reader that is on the front of a redbox machine. They are EXTREMELY durable, and have a very high acceptance rate.
