Hamilton changer issue

Has anyone had any experience with converting a Hamilton changer to a Mars kit? I have an ER60-STA Hamilton changer. I am thinking of converting the inner workings of my Hamilton changer to a Mars conversion kit. For some reason it keeps jackpotting and every time I send it into Hamilton for service then can't recreate the problem and they want to replace everything.

There's not much to a Hamilton changer. There's the controller, the hopper, the validator and wiring harness. A jackpotting issue wouldn't likely be caused by the validator, so replacing that with a Mars acceptor won't change that. The hopper switch could be failing or out of adjustment and might cause an extra payout here and there, but it wouldn't cause a random jackpot. That only leaves the harness and the controller, or someone tampering with the changer. If you know the changer is jackpotting on its own and not being tampered with, start by replacing the controller. If you're just finding the hopper empty and no bills in the stacker, you're probably getting strung. A Mars conversion will stop that. Also examine the harness for any sign of tampering, install a disconnect on the white wire to the hopper and secure all the wiring to the cabinet so it can't be snared through the coin cup. Make sure the changer is on a GFCI circuit.

What do you want to know about converting a Hamilton changer to an after market validator? I’ve only done a couple of hundred over the years. There are number of validators that will work.

When you say the changer is “Jackpotting” do you mean that it is totally empty and the “Out of Service” light is “On” on the front of the changer? Are there a small number of coins in the bottom of the Hopper?

A payout switch won’t cause a Hopper to Jackpot. Do you have a coin cup guard on the coin cup? Check you’re wiring harness around the coin cup to see if it’s been tampered with? Flip the Hopper coin dump switch, do coins come out when you flip this switch? If they do check the wiring harness about halfway up the harness that goes to the Hopper for a bright yellow or green tag, unplug the white connector at this connection, this will disable the Hopper dump switch. A controller could do it but it very unlikely, I’ve only seen it a couple of times.

I have an ER-60 and was strung a couple of times when I had the Hamilton XE validator. I changed over to a MARS validator a couple of years ago and haven't had a problem since.

I also own a hamiton changer and was hit last month by a stringer. Jeff, if you dont mind me asking, how much did you pay for the Mars conversion kit?

Thanks,

Matt in Columbus, Ohio

The Rear load Mars/Hamilton conversion kit will cost you in the neighborhood of about $525.00 with shipping. The kit includes everything you need to install a Mars validator. The Pyramid Aqua kit is about $425.00

Thanks for the info Gents. I plan on looking into the replacement. Until then I have been reduced to unpluging the unit while no one is on duty. The traffic doesnt justify the risk of loss.
