Hopper making grinding noise

My attendant just called.....said the hopper in my RNS is making a grinding noise. Payout is now intermittent.

What's up? Probably a bad planetary in the motor.....requiring a motor replacement???

Yes, and it's pretty straightforward to replace it although there's a procedure for getting the plate adjusted and you'll need a long T-handle Allen wrench. You'll want to check the plastic backing plate for excessive wear and the bottom of the bowl for a groove. If all those parts are worn, you're almost better off just buying a new hopper.

Rudy, You’re going the have to replace the Hopper motor assembly part #11-0096B. To get hub off the motor shaft you’re going to need a 3/32” Allen wrench that’s at least 6 inches long. Take a look at the Hopper bowl, if it has a groove worn in the bottom of the bowl you’re going to want to replace that also, the Hopper bowl assembly is part #11-0017A. Also take a look at the Hopper motor mounting plate, that’s the part that the motor is attached to. You’re looking for cracks and excessive wear on the front, sometimes they get a deep groove worn into the face from the pin wheel. The motor mounting plate is part #11-0007. While you’ve got it apart you might as well replace the switch. Hamilton came out with a new style payout that’s real easy to install, no adjustment. It’s is a #100-0151, when you connect the wires to the switch you have to be very careful and follow instructions, if you don’t you can damage the controller. When you reinstall the coin pin wheel onto the motor shaft and hub you want to have about .005 clearance between the coin pinwheel and the Hopper motor mounting plate. Your Hopper is definitely worth fixing, all those parts will run about $250, a new Hopper from KR is $566.
