Labor costs

Could anyone give me an idea on how much just the labor would cost to refurbish a self serve bay? Or really a 7 bay ss and the mechanical room. Nothing was maintained. Only the pumps, the wax with out hot water, high pressure soap and the triple foam brushes work. And by that I mean barley holding on. Pre soak, tire and engine cleaner and pretty much the triple foam manifolds lines and fittings crusted with dry soap. The compressor was not maintained properly, not mounted or even level. The piston burned out so im sure they were losing air and someone then stuffed metal mesh in fittings in hopes to make it foam. Needless to say clogged all the lines and then sat. I fixed it all and I have a bill for the owner but id just like to compare it to something. If anyone could help me out in the slightest it would be greatly appreciated.

Tough call. It would be a lot easier if it was a standard procedure such as servicing a cat pump.

Some people are just way more productive than others with their time. I’ve seen old timers that charge $125 per hour and are worth it. When I work for others I charge $100/hr because I feel I tend to be slow and and don’t get as much done as some are capable of.

If you know what you’re doing and work at a OK pace $75/ hour is probably a starting point these days in my area for technician work.

On one of the Facebook groups one operator said their distributor has two service levels based on technician abilities and bill out over $300/hr for their” level II “ techs

Knowledge and efficiency are important for hourly rate. Did you talk to the owner about what you were going to charge before you started?

No, he just said to bill him. I took the job for a fill in between my my other jobs. I guess im more of a carpenter. Zak of all trades.... Master of one... Figuring anything out. It did take some time for me get this one. I had no help; information wise. No one could tell me anything or would who knows. Not even what the p.s.i. on the compressor should be. What they did tell me was all wrong. They stuffed wire mesh in any fitting they could find in the bays to try and make them foam. Now I have it down though and I continue to maintain it. So it took me a little to teach myself. But most of that was reading. Forums like this one and watching YouTube on my spare time. I basically took the whole thing apart, cleaned it and put it back together. What do you guys think that that's worth? I'll most likely show him this. I just want to be honest and fair.

I guess then who measures knowledge and efficiency. Time or efficiency really has nothing to do with it if it isn't by the hour, and job complete so the knowledge is there. Now business wise, that I could really use some help with. No one knows a ballpark number on what something like that would cost? How about what is the most you would be willing to pay? Obviously the least would be free... Or try and put yourself in my shoes. Hoe would you approach something like this?

To install the equipment and in a clean manner (hoses clamped in a smart way which takes extra time) you can easily spend $30K on the labor. Two guys at $125/hr for three weeks. But that number would increase if you have to do electrical or plumbing modifications.

Id say start @ $20,000. Of he pays, great, if he balks... you are negotiating from a peak cost.
