I've been hearing about some new lcd(?) lights as replacements for the bay lights. I currently am using ceiliing mount metal halides that after 5 years are beginning ti fail with regularity, and am looking to replace them. I know there are some new type flouerscents that are available. Any thoughts?

Maybe LED lights - LCD is not a light. LEDs are still incredibly expensive and very low output. A 60 watt equivalent can run over $150 each, and you'd need 10 to 20 to light a bay.

There haven't been any major changes to fluorescents other than more efficient electronic ballasts.

Going by light output per watt, nothing comes even close to metal halide, particularly the pulse-start models.

There is a recent article in National Petroleum News on the LEDs. Cost about 5x that of MH and payback is about 5 years on cost of operation in electricity savings. Maintenmance savings may exist as well.

Thanks for the feed back. I meant LEDs. That was a bad morning when I posted the question....anticipation of Ike. I couldn't even think of the type of lights I have now...Scottsdale. Survived Ike, got electric back last night and all is well. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those less fortunate.

All things considered, there's nothing better than what you have now. High-pressure sodium will yield more light per watt and provide a lot of light, but the quality is horrendous. After your question I looked some more into LED lighting, and for what you'd spend trying to light a bay even marginally over the life of the LED lights, you could light them well with one Scottsdale.

We have them, and I plan to put a timer on the ones at the rear of the bays. When I turn off half of them to service or change a bulb, the bays are still fairly well lit. I'm planning to shut off half at midnight.

Glad you weathered the storm ok.

Thanks again. MEP, you always have good answers and I respect your opinion. Maybe I'll just replace the Scottsdales I have now. I have looked at the new style flourescents that Grainger carries, they are comparable to the Scottsdales in their light output, but a little pricier, I think. About $16.00 for the tubes and about $140.00 for the fixture. Maybe a little more for the hazardous location fixtures.
