500 watt halogen would be a bad idea. It won't be too much light, but it'll cost you a fortune to run. Two of these:

with 54W T5 bulbs will give twice as much light and use half the electricity. Good bulbs have a 36,000 hour life, which means no maintenance for around 8 years.

Posted this befoe. When I took over my location it had 4 four foot HO single tube flourescent fixtures. Each mounted on the sidewall at about 9' high and 2 feet in from the end.

When the ballasts died I bought these replacemnts from Grainger http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/LITHONIA-Fluorescent-Fixture-1VNU5?Pid=search

They are 2 tube four foot HO at 102-108 watts per fixture and dual voltage.

(432 watts per bay)

They do a great job.

Bought 2 of the TSS type lights mentioned above. Think I got them from KR. Tried them before install and did not think they provided anywhere near the light of the HO. I have now used them as replacements in my building where I wanted a litte better light.

I didn't look at the link DiamondWash gave before I posted - it's the same light fixture as what I linked, but their price is $100 more than what Bubbles Galore paid through his source.

I love my Simkar lights! They make an absolutely huge difference! The T5's are worth their weight in gold if you like light.

I just put 4 of the 4 bulb Kleen Rite T5HO fixtures in my bays. I had them wired so I can have all 4 fixtures on or just 2. I think on dark NW days I will have all 4 on and then after 11pm jsut 2 fixtures to save a little power. They reall y light the place up and make it look inviting to passing traffic. Now to upgrade the lot lights....
