I noticed today that one of my rails is cold. The drivers side is nice and warm. The passenger rail heat is cold. What should I be looking for? Thanks!
Look in the end plate where the conduit goes into the rails normally on entrance end. You will have wire connections there. Sometimes just a wire connection is fried and will need to be redone.
If they all look good you will need to determine if voltage is present, use a hot stick. It is high voltage. Usually 208vac. If voltage is present you will need to pull the heat tape out. Older LW 4000s have two in series. Some will only have one long one. If it is two tapes be sure to note how all wire connections are made. Be sure to shut breaker off for rail heat when pulling out!
Usually it wil be pretty apparent if the tape is fried. It will be brittle or have some black areas.
I'm assuming this is not a new install, and the rail heat worked last year.
