Mat & Rug Cleaners

I was just wondering if any operators have purchased a mat and rug cleaner for their customers to use. Do you let your customers use it for free or do you charge? Where on your location do you place the mat and rug cleaner? And what type of cleaner do you use?

Thanks!

I have a JKO big brusher, model BBX I believe. It is free to use, just push a button and it starts up. Customers really like it. I get a lot of great feedback from them. I believe it helps build loyalty. It's mounted at the end of one of the vacuum islands

Cleaning

We actually have a competitor down the street that has a JKO BBX. We tried it out and really like the design and easy to use concept. I was also wondering if there is any cleaning or monthly maintenance on these machines?

The service is free to all. The unit has a dust pan that should be emptied out every couple of days. It is amazing to see the amount of dirt embedded in mats. The dust bin also collects water when it rains, so it should be emptied after a rain. I just dump the debris in the trash can if it's dry, in the bay if it's wet. It also has bearings that must be greased monthly.

I've had the unit about eighteen months. It has eaten about half a dozen mats, but there is usually a good reason. Torn or rubber mats can get caught in the brushes. It clearly states not to insert them, but you know customers....

I have a "Rug Beater" at the tunnel that the crew use all week and on Sat. On Sundays I go Exterior only and let the customers use my central vacs and the rug beater at no extra charge... I only keep one employee most Sundays. The customers love to use it.

I purchased JKO beater with bill acceptor during the 07 ICA show. I charge $1 and have it conveniantly located in my vending area not 40 feet from all vacuums. I have a large sign on springs advertising it located so that everyone who goes through my wash knows I offer matt cleaning. The usage is slow and not much of a profit center. I have been very disappointed in the customer response. I am glad I have it, but look at it as more of a conveniance/service, rather than profit center. We keep it clean and it work well, but people tend to not use it that much...and my vacuums are usually busy. I would say about 2% of my vacuum traffic will use the matt brusher. ROI will be over 8 years.
