I have a medco key that I have no spare copies of. I would like to have a copy made. I don't have the origonal tag that has the key number on it. Is there a place I can send my key to have a copy made?

Recently, we stopped at a local locksmith to have a spare key made for plug style Medeco locks for our bill changer. The locksmith could do it but recommended both new locks, keys, & the housing that the plug fits into. He could tell by examining it the level of wear making the extra key less practical. We bought new but in a emergency we could still use our old complete sets temporarily. When I visited with RA-Lock ... it sounded like even if the Medeco lock was quite old ... if bought from them ... they would have a record of the key number etc.

Your chances of getting a spare key made for a Medeco lock are about slim to none. The keys are controlled as are the key blanks. Even with the key number you have to go back who you bought the lock from to get a key made. I tried to get RA lock to make a key for Medeco plug lock from a Hamilton bill changer, they wouldn’t make it and I had the key number, same story with a Medeco plug lock I bought from KR.

Go talk to your locksmith and explain the situation. Have him visit the wash and all your locks and the one in question. If he is a medeco dealer I would bet he would make the keys for you. I have mine made locally and have been in the same situation.

I've dealt with a local locksmith on such a matter and the last thing I would do is let him know where he can go with the key to open something. I had put Medeco deadbolts on a door and needed extra keys, so I took one to the only locksmith in town who could copy them to have some made. He looked at the key, then asked with a very creepy, suspicious grin, "What does this go to?" I told him it was none of his ****ing business, and I paid with cash.
A locksmith who is Medeco licensed can get copies of a key made only if the blank type is not controlled. The situation is not the issue with them - they don't decide who has a legitimate right to copy the key and who doesn't.
