Visa/MasterCard Phone Fraud

As we have noted in recent issues, the bad guys are hitting the phones lately to induce you into their scams. As if phishing and rogue security was not enough, now we have to put up with them calling us too! Here's one of the latest which involves a caller claiming to be from VISA or MasterCard reaches out to you. Note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they already have it. They claim to be from the Security and Fraud Department at the card company and even give you a badge number. The bad hat tells you that your account has been flagged for unusual purchase patterns and ask is you bought a fictitious product when you say no they say they will credit your account and go on to verify your address. They then ask you for the code on the back of your card. It all sounds so legit, but don't do it. They want the number on the card so as to make a charge to it. Call your credit card company directly before giving out any information. This scam has been verified on snopes.com.
