I have been thinking of buying a Mr. Clean franchise. What do the car wash folks think of this opportunity?

Never heard of a Mr. Clean franchise. I did a search and nothing came back worth looking at. Why would you want or need a franchise to be in the carwash business. It?s nothing more than a Ma-Pop janitorial business. Once you get it up and running it?s basically a janitorial type job. I don?t think the janitor that cleans this office building has a franchise.

While I can see Kevins pessimism, it may be that the idea of a franchise CW is unworthy.
I think not. I think the right idea or choice is to look at all of the features, benefits, pro's and con's to both building/operating a "mom/pop" wash or buying a complete "franchise system".
If Mr. Clean does push in to a national/regional franchise network, don't you think it will be one of the best opportunities ever? Mr. Clean is a "brand" that has a very large audience within the U.S. and around the world. The model that they are running (in my understanding) is a beta site for future opportunities within the wash market.
The locations seem to be very well laid out and are beautiful on a caliber most of us could only wish for with the right money.
Yes, this is a service business and other operations looking to franchise have failed, but the CW industry as many others; fast lube, fast food, signs, new vehicles, etc. are a very viable and well supported option for those seeking to invest in to a business with the help to be successful.
My words of wisdom are, look at both sides of what the opprotunity is and find the right choice for you to go forward with, the good news is that you will see a lot of information during your due diligence and that can prepare you for either choice of wash you decide to go with.
Good Luck!

Rapido Rabbit anyone? Maybe Kwik Kar? The franchised car wash is not going to work any time soon. Name brand goes along way, but if you dont have the right operation, name brand will give you that first wash and the bad operation will cost you the repeat business. There is too much to know about this industry and there are not many that know it. You cant afford to pay repairman every time a solenoid sticks, etc. I notice this is your first post. Any experience in this industry. There are more salesmen than technicians. Be wary of something that seems to good to be true.

These are some thoughts from an article that I wrote several years ago for Professional Carwashing & Detailing magazine.

1) A successful carwash franchise will require a good franchise system. A good system is the result of the franchisor conducting a substantial amount of research on the respective industry.

2) A successful carwash franchise will require good franchisees. Since franchise outlets achieve success through implementation and not innovation, a good carwash franchisee will be one who is a good follower.

3) The franchisor will need to deliver the brand, operating systems, marketing programs, research and development and training programs necessary to support the franchisee. In order to deliver on this promise, the carwash franchisor will need a strong management team and an unwavering commitment to the business model.

4) A good carwash franchise will require principals who are financially prepared to establish the system and grow the franchise.

5) A good carwash franchisor will be wise enough to "limit" participation to investors who are both bankable and capable.

6) A successful carwash franchise will be created by growing the business through "sales" and not by "selling" carwash chemicals and equipment.

I would imagine that a Mr. Clean franchise would need to stick close to the mark with respect to these criteria, especially the last two. Otherwise, I believe that the initiative would eventually fall by the wayside as many other "get rich quick" carwash franchises have.

Me, I wouldn't go into a CW franchise.
You have to
- be mechanically minded
- do your homework (i.e. on this board)
- and look for a GOOD distributor.

I feel then there is no need for a franchiser.
With the money you save on the fee you can make a few mistakes.

While in Fort Lauderdale, I came upon a Full Service wash (Majestic on Federal Highway 1) and the 4 times I past by it, they were busy.

2 blocks to the N there is a sign stating that a Cactus Car Wash is coming soon.

Based on the Cactus website, the new site (if not a company store) will have to fork over a $30,000 franchise fee + Royalty payments of 5.5% of gross sales - so he/she will already be behind the 8-ball compared to the busy wash 2 blocks South.

Although 5.5% of gross sales doesn't sound like much, to a start-up it can be the diffetrence between making it and not.

5.5% of gross is probably about one third of NET. That's a big chunk off the top. The only advantage I can see of a franchise is if they do the proper due dilligence AND set the place up so a novice can operate it. Anyone wanna do a Bennigan's ?

I have seen many franchises or chains attempted. One of the biggest challenges I have witnessed for operations that employ a blanket "system" of operation is simply lack of flexibility. What works in one market may not work in another. If the system is rigid then the competitor (ma-pop)that most adapts to the customer's needs in that market beats out the franchise/chain locations with it's rigid systems in place.

Just my .02 for what its worth.

If Mr. Clean is franchising it is probably in conjunction with Pronto Wash and their "waterless' car wash franchises. Pronto is a franchisor and my guess is that Mr. Clean may become or already is a master franchisee.
