Now that the New colored $5 bill is on the street. I got a couple of nice crisp bills to test on the Validators that I have. Here are the results of my testing.
The Hamilton HVX will on occasion accept the New $5 bill, about 50% of the time. I found this to be unacceptable. If you?re using a HVX validator you?ll need to replace it.
The Hamilton STA v2.50 and the XE v2.11 will also occasion accept the New $5 bill about 40-50% of time. This acceptance rate was also unacceptable. If your using either one of the those validators they?ll need to be upgraded to a v3.00. The STA and XE that were upgraded to v3.00 had a very high acceptance rate of around 99%.
The Mars validators AE2600 & VN2400 will not accept the New $5 bill. They will need to be upgraded. Once they were upgraded the acceptance rate was also about 99%. I did get a call this afternoon from a customer who said that his un-upgraded Mars AE2602 validator had taken a new $5 bill.
The Standard 600 validator would not accept the New $5 bill. They will need to be upgraded
The Coinco Mag-50 wouldn?t accept the new $5 bill. The upgraded Mag-50 that I have would accept the bill about 99% of the time.
The Pyramid validator wouldn?t accept the new $5 bill. Pyramid has not released the upgrades as of today.
The bottom line is if you want to accept the New $5 bill your going to have to upgrade your equipment. Either by upgrading the software if the validators you have now are upgradable or replacing the validator.

I am currently updating all our mars validators with a flash programmer I bought,3 weeks ago. I have had no problems updating them, and should be finished tomorrow.

Most all bill acceptors will need upgraded.

Yes Tim, I can upgrade your MEI/Mars validators in the S/S bays. There are two ways to do it. I can send you a programmer and you can do it yourself or you can send me your validators. I can also do the Coinco Mag-50's but they have to come in.

I found that my cummins jet scan money counter will count the new $5 bill with no upgrades. I had already upgraded my bill acceptors a while ago and I got 3 of the new fives last week.

Randy,
Have you had any issues with Unitec Wash Select II's? We upgraded some Coinco units with a programmer and they accepted the new $5's. We then reprogrammed our vip coupons and then the new $5's wouldn't work again. In a nutshell, we can either get our coupons to work or the new $5's but not both. I'm thinking you are more familiar with Hamilton but was hoping you had ran into this.

Soapy, my Cummins accepted and counted the new bills also. We put the new chips in our XE's last week and started getting the new 5's. I tested the new 5's in an XE at the shop and it took the new 5 once and paid on the test and rejected it after the first acceptance. I figured we'd have to redo the cummins also but no problem! Some days ya get lucky!

SteveJ, Randy updated 1 coinco for me and is in the process of updating another. He or anyone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Randy told me that once you update to the new $5, you can not use the vip coupons.

I noticed several new $5's in my ACW-IV's via my Iowa validators also...... The last I checked, Iowa was going to be a week or two having a real upgrade available. If you hear anything else...please post.

Someone told me that the $1 bill is getting redesigned in August. Does anyone know if there is any truth to that? I certainly hope not!

From the Treasury Website:

The first denomination to be redesigned, the $20 bill, was issued in 2003. The redesign effort continued with the $50 bill issued in 2004, the issue of the $10 bill in 2006, and the $5 bill in 2008. A new $100 bill will follow. The $1 and $2 bills will not be redesigned.

They're not likely to change the $1 bill since they really want to phase it out in favor of $1 coins.
