We had a cold burst last week and decided to set up the freeze protection for the winter. The forecast looks like we are going to be warm for a while.

I have a weep mizer connected to a normally open Dema Valve for my weep system.

Here is the question. Will having a normally open Dema powered/closed while not in use have adverse effects on it's longevity? I don't want to wear it out unnecessarily. Thanks!

Oh boy it’s Weep time. No, having power to your Normally open DEMA solenoid valve will not affect the longevity of the valve. You should be using a diaphragm type Normally open solenoid valve, like a ASCO 8210G34 or a DEMA 0474P

I Have found the Asco valves last much longer than the Dema valves for the weep.

Personally, I don't like to have my NO valve energized for 7-8 months straight. Without any cold water running through it to help cool it, and it not cycling, just bothers me to have it there "cooking". I take away the power to it and shut off the water to it until the weather turns cold.

I have no proof that the life is extended, just a personal preference.

If its not dropping below freezing for more than a day or two I power down and turn off water. Unless theres a chance i may be busy and off site when the possibility of freezing could occur. No need to have it cooking and working for nothing. But you have to remember to turn back on!
