Compliments to Dave.

In October this year I had the pleasure of attending the NRCC in Atlantic City, New Jersey. I went as a representative of the Autocare Forum, compliments of Mr. Bill Pitzer, and had a wonderful time.

One highlight of the show for me was the Early Bird Session at the Trump Taj Mahal Conference area. There, I listened to discussions about the smallest details of carwash ownership and operation. Many operators were concerned with financing, while others shared ideas about lower car counts due to the economy and poor weather patterns. One topic I enjoyed was adding used car sales to a carwash and detail business; I am in the process of adding used car sales to my own wash.

Another program I enjoyed was Mike Benmosche of Mang Insurance giving an informative talk on Sudden Unintended Acceleration, a potential hazard at carwashes everywhere. Mike discussed three unfortunate deaths that have occurred at carwashes involving Jeep Cherokees. Mike taught ways to keep employees and customers safe at the carwash. Mike stressed proper protocol for licensing and testing employees, and for designating safe areas for customers and employees at any wash. Mike’s discussion was great; the perfect combination of statistics and practical solutions to a serious situation.

Joe Bastardi was the keynote speaker at the 2011 NRCC show. He proved quite entertaining; he was funny and self-effacing. He gave explanations of large weather patterns, what creates certain weather and the influence of volcanoes and ocean temperatures on climate change and the weather. It was fun to listen to Joe because he is passionate about his career in weather and loves what he does. He fairly accurately predicted the early snowstorm that blanketed the Northeast in heavy, wet snow before Halloween, 2011.

Overall, I had a great time in Atlantic City at the NRCC Show. The carwash ‘community’ is great one to be around. Our industry truly has some genuine, positive and funny people. They treat new operators like me with kindness, always generous with hard-won wisdom, carwash knowledge, money-making strategies, and other nuggets of interest (one good friend is a pilot, one an operator as well as a carwash electronics master). I was happy to be a part of the 2011 NRCC Show in Atlantic City. The experience made me even more excited to see it all again only bigger in Las Vegas next spring!
