Scrounging for parts on the web

I've always enjoyed finding sources for wash parts other than the manufacturer. After a while you can get pretty good at it. There are a lot of pitfalls though. One of the big things is that you don't always find cheap parts on the net. I recently tracked down a plc for a foreign automatic. One place , with an excellent web site, quoted me $1,800. I found it on ebay, new in the box, for $351. Factory price was around 8 or 9 hundred.

I recently bought 40lbs of brass pipe fittings on eBay for around $100. Having spare hose barbs around in the month since has already saved me much more than the price I paid. Twice since then I have needed the 3/8 x 3/8 barb and would have had to shut down and drive 20 miles to get them.

That said, I just ordered (10) 3/8 x 3/8 hose barbs in stainless steel as the brass ones seem to last about 1 year and seem to break at times that make me wonder just how much bad karma I have managed to accumulate over the years. The next rainy day I will replace every 3/8 hose barb in the ER.

I've done a lot of shopping with eBay stores. The cameras I buy cost $200 retail, but I get them for $75 with shipping. I saved $20 a tire and $10 per tube by going to an outdoor equipment supplier vs. buying them from Belanger (and it's the exact same tire), and I saved over $300 on a compressor motor over Ingersoll-Rand's price, and the eBay seller shipped it free.

Windtrax carries most of the fittings in stainless steel at a very good price.
