Super charged bay lights

We read articles on converting Hubbell wall packs bay lights 175 watt to 85watt CFL spiral type--made calls and found weak spot was overheating in light unit. So we did conversion and then put a 3x3" computer fan to move air around to cool lamp----last night we did a quick test---the original 175 w lense was fairly hot---the conversion was just warm---I know--very scientific---so the next thought was---these plastic lenses may actually last longer as it seems heat is to blame for ruining plastic lens over time? we say now the light is supercharged---Blown.

Were you having problems with your fixtures overheating? I checked my Hubbels last night with the 85w CFL conversion and the plastic lens was just warm to the touch....You would get burned with the 175w Mercury Vapors installed. Just wondering if the fan is needed?

I also replaced a few of the hubbel covers/lenses...I am not getting any discoloration like I was getting with the 175w bulbs...

I am 3 months + into the conversion...Not a single failure. Hope I didn't just jinx myself...

The guy I talked to about bulb selection said Bulbs only work to stated hours if in an open fixture----if enclosed ---otherwise-much less due to bulb overheating---

Can you post pictures? Also, if you used a computer fan, most 3 x 3 fans are 12v DC. How did you convert from 110v AC to 12v dc? Most of these fans run on less than 2 watts, so running the fan won't cost hardly anything.

this is what we used---this one is on ebay-
