Just finished reading "Endurance" by Alfred Lansing. It's the story of an expedition to the Antarctic in 1914 or so by Ernest Shackleton. They were going to cross that continent a hundred years ago. On foot with dog sleds. Even today with all the communication means available, you go there and you are pretty much on your own. Things went from bad to worse. It tells how they survived for close to two years and managed to get back to help in 20some foot boats, in the worst seas on the planet. We all like to think that in our youth we were ready to set off on an adventure to the far corners of the planet. Most don't. These guys did. Just a compelling story of will to survive. Makes some of my discomforts seem pretty trivial. You can find nice used copies for ten bucks on Amazon.

I read every adventure book I can find, "Endurance" is a good one. Those guys were men. If you're looking for more of the same I have a long list.
Ranked #1 all time in adventure books is "The Worst Journey in the World" about Scott's south pole expedition, if you liked Endurance you will probably like Worst Journey too.
