I just reread the book by Spencer Johnson named “Who Moved My Cheese” again to “adjust” my attitude in this time of uncertainty and change. I would recommend it highly to anyone in the business world. I’m sure many of you have read this short book or heard of it.
There are four imaginary characters in this story— the mice, Sniff and Scurry, who act out of animal instinct and “the little people”, Hem and Haw, who represent the complex and intellectual human side of the story. They all enter into the “Maze” of life looking for an endless supply of “Cheese” at the end of one of the paths in the maze. Sniff puts his nose into the air and eventually finds the cheese as Scurry scrambles along to keep up with Sniff. Hem and Haw are more methodical in searching because of their intellect but eventually find the same cheese. All four eat their fill and return every day to satisfy their hunger along familiar paths. Hem and Haw, the little people, get fat and lazy and expect the cheese to be there each day even though the amount of cheese is getting smaller and smaller. Hem thinks he is “entitled” to the cheese. The cheese eventually disappears completely.
Sniff and Scurry, being mice, start out in the maze again to find some “New Cheese”. Eventually they do. Hem and Haw are another matter; they return day after day to the same empty cheese depot (getting thinner and thinner) waiting for more cheese to be delivered. They whine and moan because the cheese is not there. Eventually Haw decides complaining about the lack of cheese is getting him nowhere, so he goes out into the maze to find the “New Cheese”. He does find the “New Cheese” with Sniff and Scurry already there. Hem is still complaining about no cheese, but no one is listening.
