wash owners bad mouthing other washes

the only other car wash owner in town started a radio ad telling people to use his "touchless" car wash because you don't want brushes dulling your paint.... he owns a touchless and we own a tunnel. actually we own 3 different washes which are a mix of tunnel and touchless, but the competitor to this guy is a tunnel. he is in a really bad location and isn't really competition to us as he is limited with only 1 touchless bay and 3 ss bays. but I think it is odd that someone would spend money convincing people that washes damage vehicles just to get business. anyone else run into this? competitors telling people your wash damages their car somehow?

yup, every car dealership in our area that has a car wash attached tells their customers that "all car washes scratch cars." except ours of course so make sure you keep washing your Benz here.

It sucks, but this happens in all businesses from restaurants to dentists. Don't focus on his failure as a businessman.

Sadly we are our own worst enemy. When cloth came in they had a display with petrified filament next to cloth to show it was better. Then some lambs wool people did the same with a display of petrified cloth and filament. Then touchless people did the same. You might try reaching out to the person and ask then to roll back the language before you run the ad referring to touchless washes using harsh chemical and extreme pressures that may adversely affect the environment and car finishes. Offer to simply take the high rod and simply state the method is gentle.

Jerry you could not be more right on. I sell automatics to car dealers, good ones I might add. It is unbelievable what I see for wash operations at dealerships. Most have a Broadway, if they have a machine at all, that was designed when Carter was president. It has a stinking mitter for the hood, windshield and roof. Every single place with one of these has to hand wash it before entering. Many places simply have a guy with a hose, bucket, and a rag. Even at high end dealerships. Just nuts.

I went to a dealership and they had a brand new Corvette in the showroom with really bad swirl marks all over it. About a month later I found out why, they had an ancient rollover in the back, and as they unloaded cars from the haulers they ran them through to get the road grime and rail dust off.

Just my observation that we should be cautious about: Last summer ... during a water restriction period ...one of the main local media on her business reporting took a quote from the ICA people (out of context?) & made it sound like by the public using tunnel & express etc more precious water was saved. She neglected to mention the most amount of potential saving of water from self service bays ... as if we did not exist. I think that the media who are supposed to be unbiased unconsciously gravitate to the businesses that spend the most on advertising with them. Car Dealerships tend to spend a lot of dollars on advertising with the media ... just saying that could be a factor???

Could it be that the tunnel and express washes are using reclaim water while your self-serve does not?

She neglected to mention the most amount of potential saving of water from self service bays ... as if we did not exist.

My evidence is based on the fact that most of our specific customers use the presoak &/or foaming brush. So the water used that I notice is just whatever minutes of less than 3 gpm from the wand or gun. So can someone who has tested car washes other than self service show &/or explain how the other style of car washes use less water than most self service car washes? My sense that my previous post & this post is related to whatever that is derogatory & less than truthful towards another car wash which seems to be the thrust of this specific thread.
