I just changed out the spray tips on the D&S 5000 in the wash I am trying to bring back on line. Aside from noticing that a variety of different styles of tips had been installed, over half were completely blocked with brown hard residue. The wash is plumbed with pvc but the water main may be galvanized or iron or something else. the wash was shut down for 4 years, froze several times. (I could fill a page here with what was damaged) anyway, is this kind of deposit normal and expected or should I install some kind of filter on the incoming water, and would that be enough or do I need to move my softenter/charcoal filter "up the line" so it treats everything that comes through rather than just the RO plant?

You don't want to run all your water through a charcoal filter or you'll end up with algae growing in the lines. It's only there to protect the RO membrane from the chlorine.

You need a hardness test kit to make sure the softener is working properly. Even so, there may be something in the water that the softener won't remove.

If the softener isn't treating all the water, I would at least change it to softening the supply to the chemicals. The high-pressure passes don't need soft water.
