Weep Mizer Issues...

Today I hooked 2 new sensors to my weepmizer (the older style), one 100ft, the other 50ft. When the Weepmizer was turned on the temperature said it was 54°, when checking sensor one it was 54° and sensor 2 was 54°. On my smartphone it said it was 50 degrees outside, my friends phone said the same, the weather channel said it was 50°, the bank sign across the street said it was 51°. I know there can be variations in temperature just by a couple hundred yards, but what are you supposed to go by? Someone suggested putting the sensors in water with crushed ice, but in the directions for the weep mizer it says “The sensors are sealed against normal rain and etc. but should not be submersed in water”. I have a Ranco temperature control for the AFFB system it read 52°, in past experience this one is usually 3 or 4° higher than what the weepmizer would say. So what are the odds that both sensors would not be calibrated proper from the factory? I would hate to think that the weepmizer would not kick on until the actual temperature is 31° rather than 35°, I would rather have the weepmizer reading a couple of ° lower than higher. I know you can adjust the sensors, but it is quite difficult since you have nothing to compare it to. I trust the weep mizer and have had very few freeze ups, but we all know what a PITA that can be when it does happen. I thought give it a day or 2 with it on to see if it changes and is closer to the actual temperature, what do you think?

if it's reading 4 degrees higher than the actual temperature, I would just set it to turn the weep on at 4 degrees higher than you normally would, ie. 36 degrees instead of 32 degrees.

Where you mount the temperature sensors and how you mount the temperature sensor greatly affects the temperature reading. You want the mount the sensor on the North side of the building out of any direct sun light or reflected sunlight. You don’t want to mount the sensor directly on the building or in the bay if you have floor heat, it can pick up heat from the building and from the floor. We make an “L” bracket that’s about 6” long and mount the sensor on that so it’s not directly on the building. If you want to adjust the temperature reading down, on the back of the sensor buried in silicone is the small adjusting pot, slowly turn it clock-wise no more than ½ a turn per degree. When you compare the temperature don’t use your smart phone, it might be 20 miles away from your location or the temperature at the local bank, they are known to be off. Get another thermometer so you can get an accurate temperature at your location.

I have them mounted just like you with L brackets. I have been using a weep mizer for 20 some years.

God only knows how old my first weepmizer is, I believe it’s one of the first ones. I’ve never had any problems with it. I put a switch on the power that goes the solenoid valve so I can turn off the power to the solenoid in the summer. I leave it plugged in year round.

But im sure you have had to change the sensor? Making adjustment to come on higher would defeat the purpose of having one, you would want it to kick on at an accurate temp so you would want it to be calibrated correctly. I check the temp reading with the temp gauge in my car. It is always pretty darn accurate. You can check it against other vehicle temps.

The temp gauge in my truck is the least accurate it’s a 2011. I trust the kestrel weather meter that I linked to be the most accurate. I checked my other wash today and it was 7° lower than the actual temp, I adjusted the temp up 5°. Also called Dixmor, he said they just use a digital thermometer they got from Radio Shack years ago to calibrate their sensors, he also mentioned that when the sensor is reading lower that the problem is more likely to be in the weep mizer than in the sensor, he also said that they have a weep mizer in one wash they own that reads 8° lower and they just leave it like that, he said it never freezes up though <lol. My point is that the weep mizer is designed to save you $, so I would like it as accurate as possible.

Yesterday I took 4 thermometers to the car wash, I was curious to see how accurate my Weepmizer temperature reading is.
The Weepmizer said it was 44 deg.
The car said it was 48 deg
The bulb type thermometer said it was 45
The Radio Shack digital said it was 44.7 deg.
So which one is right. I think the thermometers are just giving a ballpark reading and none of them are 100% accurate.
