I've done that myself, had an old Nova that was hit on the right rear side in an area that was inaccessible to pounding the dent out from the backside. I filled the dent with the foam, shaped it and laid fiberglass over it. Not only did it look good, when it got hit again on the same side it was the strongest part of the area of damage with only about 1/8" of fiber and resin.
