I have tried on a few occasions by email to get an update from Unitec to no avail - no response. So, has anyone heard what plans Unitec has for making their equipment compatible with Europay, MasterCard and VISA (EMV) enabled cards? These are the credit cards that have chip technology and a magnetic strip that VISA and MC are requiring we accept this year. Also, with the bursting of Near Field Communication (NFC) devices by Apple etc onto the scene, what is Unitec doing so we can accept payment through NFC? Has anyone heard anything about this?

The last time I talked to one of my suppliers about EMV card and NFC I was told that it’s going to be years before they get it fully implemented and cost is going to very, very expensive go to the EMV card. One of the biggest problems is none of the current EMV readers are water/weather resistant. There 2 companies who currently manufacture readers that show some promise, one is in New Zealand and the other one is in Australia, the readers alone are over $2500 not including the software required to run it, both require high speed internet. The Mag stripe card will be around for a long time yet. So don’t be in any kind of a hurry.

I'm interested to hear what unitec has planned along with the other major auto cashier makers too. I thought Hamilton HTK's had a chip and pin option available for canada? Apple pay is quickly dominating NFC and has to be on everyones must have lists for future upgrades. I know I would think twice before making a sizable capital expense on auto cashiers if they don't have it on there road maps. In regards to Apple Pay, they've had a year to make plans to implement and the indicators where there long before, no excuses. The Venders better be prepared for question in Vegas.
In Canada, we've been knee deep in EMV chip and pin upgrades for the last few years. Upgrades are completed on every ATM up here and over 60% of pay at the pump gas terminals. It's not rocket science and all are weather proof btw. My ATM upgrade cost me $400 including the new keypad. Read errors are way down compared with chip. No more de-magnetized cards or damaged strip BS.

You make some good observations. When you state in Canada the 60% are already done on gas pumps & are weatherproof ... I am wondering where their weather-waterproofness falls on the IP65 -IP69 rating standard. Correct me if I am wrong ... but it seems like most gas pumps are somewhat more sheltered to protect against a driving rain or whatever ... lessening the need for as much waterproofness.

To get away from the specific topic a bit ... it seems like in self service wand style bays the IP rating of the new EMV readers will have to be even higher.
