Not sure if anyone has tried & thoroughly tested the Cat Pump or KR variable pressure gun besides myself ... but somehow we have them working out at our location & we have had compliments from some customers about that fact they can let up on the trigger to get less pressure. The "dump gun's" plunger does have to be kept free with WD40 as needed ... usually every few months ... pretty minor as far as maintenance is concerned. So our bays are all "up to 1500 PSI" but not if the customer prefers less. Granted ... with the trigger let up ... there is slightly more water used but the Cat310 - 3HP combo limits that to not much more water. Someone on this forum has remarked in the past that water dumps on the customer's foot ... that has not been our experience with those specific dump guns.

When we have a extra muddy clean up situation ... we use our 1/2" hose reel & pull out a special gun with a 2508 nozzle using as many as 4 pumps from a 7 pump manifold we built over 25 years ago. The water volume is definitely a factor in its effectiveness!

Did you have to change a pulley to get the cat 5cp pump to go to 1500 psi? Or are you using a different pump?

slash007,

We have the standard (???) diameter pulley size that came with when the pumps were brand new ... other than Specialty Equipment made it so 2 belts could go on a double groove motor pulley. 310 CAT with 3 phase 3 HP motor. We can actually go above 1500 PSI. It is very similar to what Randy posted when it comes to the part about his being 310 CAT belt driven by a 3HP motor. It seems like Cat's performance curve chart shows where the water volume automatically goes down when the pressure is increased by the regulator & a nozzle like Randy's that restricts enough.

Of course ... the motor pulley size makes a difference too. I am not familiar with any of the direct drive (without belts) Cat Pumps. That probably would be a different sizing process ... I am not sure.

What diameter are the double-groove pulleys on the pumps?

I have JC pump stand with 3hp motors and 5cp pumps. Single pulley belt. I thought the max was 1100? Maybe you have larger pulleys than what JC supplies.

Mep001 & Slash007,

Eyeballing with a tape measure it shows 10" diameter for the pump pulley & 4" diameter for the motor pulley. The double groove 10" pulleys were special made in a machine shop because I went to several bearing-pulley supply places & no one could find a match. One of their experts said that a machine shop's work must be the only explanation. Good thing I finally got an extra one from Specialty Equipment for my spare backup pump & tank etc. The 10" double groove pulleys that I did find on the market were way heavier than Specialty's ... I just did not feel comfortable with that extra weight.
