Hey guys need some help... lost a cat pump and can't figure it out. I've already replaced seal kit and both high and low pressure seals and still nothing. Here is a video at the pump in the bay water comes out like low pressure but then spikes to normal quickly but back down. Any ideas what I else i can check?

It kind of sounds like your not getting enough water to the pump. Does it do this on all the functions?

What function did you have it on? Is it good on rinse? It's very improbable but it almost sounds like all three connecting rods have come loose. I don't know if there's room in the crankcase for that to happen. The only other thing I can think of would be a water supply issue, most likely the check valve at the manifold under the tank, but I don't know how that could make the pressure just drop to nothing and randomly come back up. They usually just fail closed and you're done.

Thanks for the replies guys...here is another video

Watch "Trouble shoot CAT 5CP" on YouTube

This is a JC coleman SS we opened the ball valve wide open under the rinse tank and that seemed to help.

Have you checked you valves?
Yes sir first thing I thought of and changed them both high and low pressure. I also just replaced the regulator but nothing still the same....I'm really scratching my head on this

When you put in the seal kit did you check the head for being washed out? Did you pull the valves and check the valves and the valve seating surface for wash out. The 5CP are terrible pumps for wash out.

Randy I am thinking that is what the problem is....I have my maintenance guy working on it and when I trained him that was one thing I emphasized to him to check he said he did but I'm thinking he didn't because I have told him EVERYTHING to check there literally isn't anything we haven't checked. I'm heading there this afternoon to check the head myself.

I can guarantee that's not a head problem. That's got to be either air entering the system or something stopping the water flow, unless it's the least likely thing I mentioned which is the rod end caps have loosened up. If you take the head off again, push/pull on the plungers to make sure they aren't loose.

Well...verdict is in the head is washed out. I swapped it with another one I had and a new seal and valve kit and problem fixed! Pump and bay running smooth again...what can I say good help is hard to fine lol.

Now referring back to my other post who's the best at re-sleaving these...IDS or Vilco...DynaJet is no longer in business I think (sent them a head and it was returned to me)

You be surprised at the number of long time/old operators that don’t know or haven’t ever heard of “Head washout” The 5CP heads have a onetime warranty replacement. Look on the body of the head for a “W” if it doesn’t have the “W” contact Cat and they should replace it at no charge, if it has “W” then I’d send it in to IDS, I wouldn’t send it to Vilco, I had one done by them and I wasn’t satisfied. Here's a link to IDS http://idspumprepair.com/index.php
You probably ruined the seal that was in that washed out port, look at the side of the seal, if it has grooves in it or looks like it been chewed on, its ruined.

There's a raised "W" in the center of the front of the head if there's a warranty, and a "R" stamped next to it if it's been replaced (The warranty allows only one replacement).

There was another guy doing these repairs in the same city and state Dyna Jet was, hopefully doing the same permanent repair. It was mentioned in that other thread.

I'm curious what was making the pressure drop to zero and come back up if it was just the manifold washed out. That sounded like something sticking open or closed, not something fixed in place. Maybe there was a pocket of air working itself around in the head and not purging out. Glad you got it figured out.

As always thanks guys for responding throughout. I thought my guy checked it for wash out so I was really racking my brain on this one. He and I will be revisting rebuilding these heads again tomorrow morning.

Yeah I think I read before about the "R" and "W" stamp on them. I don't recall but will be checking tomorrow I was in a hurry to get home for dinner I didn't even check.

MEP I don't know know???? First time for me that a washed out head made the pump act that way. I had a washed out head about month ago but the bay/pump didn't do what this one did. I will say eventually we did blow the HP line in the equipment room that runs to the bay. I thought for sure the check valve under the tank was stuck closed or the rinse solenoid.

Thanks again guys!

If you find someone let me know I'm in DFW area. Right now I will be calling IDS or the guy close by Dyna Jet
Keep us posted on who repairs your Cat 5CP head and the costs. I've got about 10 Cat 310 heads that I need to get rid of, they are a prime candidates for re-sleeving. I also have 8 Cat 310 crank cases

I got 18 years on my 5CP heads before they started washing out. I'm not gonna complain about that.
