rust

Hi all
I have a galvanized Washtec IBA. I made the mistake trying some chemicals that were too harsh. Now this machine starts rusting everywhere. I fear in a few years there will be nothing left of the machine if I don't react immediately. Is there a solution where you don't spend big on money or time?

Shut it down, let it all dry out. Theat the rust with naval jelly, let it dry again, then paint it with a good marine paint. You might get another year or two out of it.

No, it was a name brand automatic detergent. Made me cough as well when washing the cars.And yes, it was the right dilution....

Most high quality galvanized steel products (i.e. steel buildings) come with a 25 to 30-year perforation warranty from the factory.

If the OEM is unable to provide you with a remedy, maybe the company who made the steel can.

Otherwise, I would consider contacting a steel fabricator/manufacturer in your region for a possible remedy before you try fixing the problem with home-brewed solutions that might cause even more damage.

That's a nice idea, however the warranty on my Kirby Building clearly stated that constant exposure to water mist voided the 30 year warranty against red rust.

You have a real dilema there. Once rust starts it can and will spread to all parts. Try stripping the machine as much as possible and then use phosphoric acid liberally. You will find it in products labled something like Phospho treatment. It converts rust to an inert material. Next go to a marine supply store and buy some zinc sacrificial tabs and put them on the frame. They are designed to give up electrons and get "eaten" instead of the steel.

Ouch, this sounds like a painful problem.
Over the years I've used sandpaper & primer, naval jelly, rustoleum, etc. Tried the "phospho" stuff that mac suggests 2 summers ago on my trailer, I was disappointed. (Maybe I didnt do it right?)

One product I did use about 10 years ago worked GREAT, unfortunately I dont recall the name. It was a "rust converter", the idea is that it chemically transforms the rust into something else. I got it at a local hardware store (Ace?), it came in a spray can. A little bit of rough sanding, spray it on. It was black which is the color I wanted anyway, so I didnt even have to paint over it. That stuff was fantastic!
