Does anyone have an electronic coin acceptor in their vacuums or other completely outdoor coin mech without a heater inside? I am sure heaters have temporarily been disconnected or not working in sub zero temps ---for even the operators with heaters ---so actual experience on an intermittent basis would help also.

I am trying to understand at what temperature an electronic coin acceptor will actually malfunction? Before I buy 12 electronic coin acceptors it would be nice to know because it will have a bearing on which brand I choose.

Inside our bays, it never gets below freezing so other than the heater helping the moisture issue, I assume there won't be a problem with temperatures right at the freezing temp --- it is more well below freezing that I am concerned about.

I've never seen an issue with any coin acceptor due to cold alone, although it never gets below 20° here. Electronics are usually more susceptible to heat than cold.

The only coin acceptor that I can recall that had problems in cold weather was the Secure coin. But they are no longer in business. I’d still put a heater in the coin box with a small thermostat. Before you spend a lot of money on coin acceptors I’d check and see if an electronic coin acceptor will fit into your 23 years Doyle vac’s. The last time I put new electronic coin acceptors in an old vac I had to cut the back of the coin box out with a plasma cutter.

coin accepter

I am in north central montana, this past winter was one of the coldest -20 for 30 days straight.I had no problems with my ma800's in my vacuums.I also have slugbusters 111 and had no troubles.Customers willing to vaccum was another story.I don't use heaters in them.I also use MA800's in my bays with heaters due to the moisture.10 years and never been replaced so far.

We use IDX MA800s in all of our outside vacuums here in Ontario - Never use heaters. They work really well. Normally cold alone won't affect the electronics, but cold and moisture together can cause problems.

I've used the Slugbuster II's for 10 years in my bays and my vacs without a temperature issue.

I thought Secure Coin relocated in Winnipeg, Canada & changed their name & improved their product???
Secure Coin I believe was actually reselling Magikist units (yes out of Winnipeg)
http://www.magikist.com/index.php?pid=8&sec=6000&sub=6010&product=247

I use only their coinmechs as they work best for Canadian coins (MA800 have difficulty with Canadian quarters). Yes their new units are better, but I have the old ones too and don't have any problems. My vacs do not have heaters and no problems either and it get very cold up here.

The Secure Coin EP-5 Plus coin acceptor was made by Magkist in Canada for the US market. After Secure coin went belly up they revised there coin acceptor and came out with the CP900. I’ve sold a few of them here in the US and they seem to work well. www.magikist.com/files/File/CP900.pdf

Randy,

Yes I have about 10 of these and 8 of the old kind in service (the relay ones) and they have been very good (newer ones are better). But I purchased them because of the pre-programmed Canadian coins.
